Patience

Patience is what makes the difference between catching a migrating salmon and not for this Grizzly Bear and her cub. The grizzly is one of the most powerful land mammals, and can grow up to 1,500 pounds and reach speeds up to 35 miles per hour.

Each fall, the grizzly will add up to four hundred pounds of fat to sustain itself through the long winter hibernation. The salmon that migrate through the rivers and tributaries near the grizzly's native forests serve as a primary source of this well-needed nutrition.

The grizzly bear can be found primarily in Canada, with the province of British Columbia claiming half the grizzly population. The northernmost states of Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming in the United States also have significant populations of these beautiful animals.

Patience depicts a sow, or female grizzly bear, patiently waiting for the returning salmon to jump up the falls. She is fishing for herself and her nearby cub, teaching her young a valuable lesson in survival. Often the sow will have learned this method and this fishing spot from her own mother, and is now passing this technique to another generation of North American grizzly bears.
