The Sentinel is a male California Quail that inhabits Southwestern Canada, the Western United States, and Northwest Mexico. Also known as a Valley Quail, these elegant gamebirds live in groups of 25 to 30 called coveys in habitats ranging from woodlands, chaparral, desert edges, and grassy valleys. California Quails are elusive birds and often more frequently heard than seen in the wild.
The Sentinel is positioned as a lookout to watch for approaching danger, and alert the covey in case of threat. They signal this danger with a loud chi-CA-go followed by a mass flush of the covey to safety.
